Michelle Heaton Reveals Double Mastectomy Quick And Easy Decision

6065734Michelle Heaton talks heartbreaking decision. Heaton, who is a British pop singer and personal trainer reveals that it took her just a couple minutes to make her mind up about her double mastectomy’ over a Nandos. The former pop group Liberty X member talked about how while she was having chicken and wine she decided to remove her breasts.

Opening up about the moment she was told she was a carrier of a gene which gave her an 85% chance of developing breast cancer, the former Liberty X star describes how she decided to have both her breasts removed in ‘a matter of minutes’ over chicken and wine with her husband, Hugh Hanley, at the popular chain restaurant.

Speaking to singer-turned-TV-host Rochelle Humes,

in the latest video from AOL’s series on parenting, Being Mum, Michelle revealed: ‘We hadn’t even sat down when she [Michelle’s consultant] said, ‘I’m really sorry, it’s bad news.’ And it was just really hard.’

She continued:

‘Then she talked to us for, like, an hour, and explained all of what was happening, what could happen. Nothing sunk in at all.

‘And we went to Nandos and had a glass of wine, as you do, over some chicken. And I think it was in a matter of minutes, we were just like, ‘The mastectomy’s a no-brainer.”

It was back in 2010 when she made the painful decision to go through the surgery following the discovery that she was a carrier of the BRCA2 gene, which gave her an 85% chance of developing breast cancer.

She wanted to get rid of the ‘dark cloud’ in her head which left her terrified that she might leave her then-one-year-old daughter Faith without a mum.

She tells Rochelle: ‘It was 85% risk of [me] getting breast cancer and, other than not being able to breast feed any other children I was going to have, there was for me no benefit in keeping my breasts.’

She also speaks about falling pregnant with second child Aaron prior to undergoing further surgery to have a hysterectomy in 2014.

She said:

‘We always knew I would probably have the hysterectomy at some point, and we just took that [getting pregnant] as a sign to have it sooner rather than later.’

And Michelle had some words of advice for anyone who should find themselves in the same position as her, saying: ‘Other than extending your family, I don’t see the reason to wait to have these operations because you’re only increasing your risk of getting it.’
