Percy Sledge has died. He is a legendary R&B and soul performer, who was known for his hit single “When a Man Loves a Woman”, but sadly he has passed away at the age of seventy-three. Sledge previously worked as a hospital nurse before he gained much success, he died at his Baton Rouge, Louisianan home, he fought a long battle with cancer.
Percy took his signature song to #1 in 1966. It was his debut single and went on to become an international hit. It was re-released in the U.K. in 1987 and still made it to #2 on the charts.
Michael Bolton’s cover of the song also hit #1 in 1991 — and it’s one of Hollywood’s favourite tunes … appearing on the soundtrack of well over 20 movies.
Sledge had other hit songs such as “Warm and Tender Love” and “Take Time to Know Her”.
