Toller Cranston has died. I find the news sad, as I watch Cranston skate many times, I thought he was just amazing. Well he was originally from Canada, and a figure skater and he had a pasiion towards painting, reportedly he passed away in Mexico at the age of sixty five. He had been credited by many with bringing a new level of artistry to men’s figure skating, also he was an Olympic medalist. It was his longtime Jeanne Beker, who told the Star on Saturday.
Beker said Cranston, real name Toller Shalitoe Montague Cranston was found dead Saturday morning in his home in San Miguel, Mexico. The circumstances are yet unclear, though Beker said there is no foul play suspected. He was from Hamilton.
When Cranston was on the ice, he was known for his humour, energetic manner and wide social circle.
“Absolutely outrageous, without question,” said Beker, who first met Cranston in 1979, when she lived across the road from him in Cabbagetown in Toronto.
“The dinner parties he threw were beyond anything you can imagine.
“There was a great sense of drama to him and he just made such a mark on all who knew him.”
It was in 1992 when he was in a depression fro almost two years, he auctioned nearly all his possessions, sold his Cabbagetown home making a far away move to San Miguel, Mexico, going after his passion for painting.
It was a necessary move, he told the Star in an earlier interview:
“I’ll never be taken seriously as an artist, at least in this country, (but) I am absolutely convinced I am one.”
