Robert Redford suffered hearing loss. The Hollywood veteran had once suffered the condition partially after he had come down with the condition on All Is Lost. It occurred when he had take a battering from a giant water hose while on set. The famous Butch Cassidy and Sundance Kid star, who,
plays a man stranded on a yacht in the middle of the Indian Ocean, spent hours shooting the film in Mexico in the same giant outdoor water tanks that James Cameron used to make Titanic, and decided to step up and perform a number of his own stunts, despite having a double available to stand in for him onset.
Redford, seventy seven, tells the New York Times,
“We get down there and, of course, my ego kicks in. I started saying, ‘I think I can try that. Let me see what I can do.’ And I realized that my doing that stuff was really a big part of the character, and that it would be much better for the film if he (director J.C. Chandor) didn’t have to cut and slice.”
What happened is Redford was doing a part where he would get sprayed with a huge water hose time and time again, costing him sixty per cent hearing loss to his left ear.
He tells the New York Times,
“They beat the hell out of me.”
