Leonardo Dicaprio’s Art auction has raised thirty five million dollars (£22.58 million) for charity. The very popular former child star from Growing pains and other roles such as in Titanic and Romeo + Juliet had raised the large amount on Monday, May 13, 2013 when she had teamed up with a top auction house selling off a collection of art. He worked with Christie‘s auction house in New York for the The 11th Hour charity event, benefiting environmental and wildlife conservation efforts.
Works from prestigious artists including Ed Ruscha, Julian Schnabel and Banksy went under the hammer, including a 2013 portrait of DiCaprio himself by Elizabeth Peyton which sold for one hundred and five million (£677,000), compared to its four hundred thousand dollars-six hundred thousand dollars (£258,000 – £387,000) estimate.
Some stars who attended were Bradley Cooper, Salma Hayek and DiCaprio’s The Great Gatsby co-star Tobey Maguire, who put in the winning bid for Sergej Jensen’s Untitled (two hundred and sixty two thousand five hundred dollars/£169,354).
All money from the sale will fund innovative conservation projects which had been chosen by the Leonardo Dicaprio Foundation and an expert panel of environmentalists.
