Avid Skier Sarah Burke has sadly passed away, this following a tragic skiing accident just last week, her publicist does confirm that the twenty nine year old had passed away peacefully with her family surroninding her.
What had happened is that the Canadian ski champion had slipped into a coma after a crash occurred during training, on s super pipe in Park City, Utah on Jan, 11. 2011.
Just last Thursday she had undergone successful surgery to repair a torn vertebral artery which had caused some breathing between her brain and skull, but still she stayed in a comma.
According to hospital officials Burke had suffered a ruptured artery, which did cause cardiac arrest, following with irreversible damage to her brain due to lack of oxygen and blood following.
As a result, Burke passed away
”peacefully surrounded by those she loved,” her parents Jan and Gordon, sister Anna and husband Rory Bushfield said in a statement. Her organs and tissues were donated per Burke’s wishes.
Burke was a free-style skier from Canada and considered a pioneer in her sport. She won gold medals in the Winter X-Games and World Free Style Skiing Championships.
”The family expresses their heartfelt gratitude for the international outpouring of support they have received from all the people Sarah touched,” they add.
