Australian stage and screen actor Matthew Newton has been ordered back to Australia so he can face assault charges. A Magistrate in Sydney has put out an order for Newton to face allegations that he had apparently assaulted a taxi drive last year 2011.
It has been reported that the star does in fact suffer bipolar and obsessive compulsive disorder, and now he stands accused of punching a cab driver during a ride through Sydney in December 2011.
The thirty five year old is at this moment he is seeking professional help for his problems and when the case had been sent back to court on Wednesday march 28, 2012, magistrate Ellen Skinner rejected an application to have the assault charge dealt with under the country’s Mental Health Act.
Skinner noted that Newton had a previous case dealt with under the act, but
”that has not successfully diverted him from coming back to the attention of the courts”.
She also did order Newton to return from America to face the charge against him at a hearing next month on April 12, 2012 and the hearing will take place at Sydney’s Downing Centre Local Court.
